I wake the next morning to the surprising sensation of a male arm wrapped around my back. I’m on my stomach. I look over and find Drew sound asleep in my bed. Last night rushes back to me—my grief, my aching loneliness. He spent the whole night holding me just because I asked. I wonder if he’s ever done that before. Not all men like to cuddle.

I slip out of bed, use the bathroom, and head to the kitchen for a glass of water. I’m so dehydrated from all my crying. I swear I cried a river. I glance around the corner of the kitchen’s half-wall, almost expecting Cinder to appear there. It’s going to take a while to get used to living alone. She was like my furry roommate and confidante.

When I get back to the bedroom, Drew’s awake, looking disoriented.

I sit on the mattress next to him. “Looks like you fell asleep during our marathon cuddling session. Thank you for that. I feel much better after a good night’s sleep.”

“I can’t believe I fell asleep so early.”

“You probably needed it. Didn’t you say you have insomnia?”

“Yeah. I sleep, but it takes a long time to get to sleep and then—”

“Nightmares?”

“Not every night. I didn’t have one last night.”

I smile and push a stray lock of hair back from his forehead, feeling warm and fuzzy inside. “I’m glad.”

He takes my hand and kisses the palm. “Are we good now? Have you forgiven me?”

He’s so anxious for me to forgive him, but it’s not that simple. I sigh. “It’s hard to let go of my dream before I even had the chance to try. I still feel robbed.”

He nods, looking resigned.

“But I’m not going to shut you out. You were there for me when I needed you most. I just need some time.”

“I understand. So, I don’t have any karate classes until three today if you need me to stick around.”

“That would be nice. I’ll take a personal day. I should’ve taken one yesterday, but it was too hard to be home alone.”

“Do you have an extra toothbrush?”

I smile. “I do. Under the bathroom sink, there’s a basket of toothbrushes and floss.”

He sits up and kisses my forehead before stroking my cheek. I gaze into his eyes, struck by how warm they seem, like he’s let me in to a new level of intimacy.

He gets out of bed and goes down the hall to the bathroom.

Hmm…we’re both here for a while, and there’s something I’ve been wanting to do with him for a very long time. Boom-chicka-wow-wow. I smile to myself and call into work, leaving a voicemail for my assistant. Now to set the scene for seduction.

First, I make the bed so it looks inviting; then I dig around in the nightstand drawer for some condoms. Aha! There’s a strip in the back behind numerous small notebooks I filled in the middle of the night with ideas for my book. I sigh. Oh, my book. Don’t think about that right now!

I go to my dresser, looking for something sexy.
